Homework
The due date for this assignment/extra credit is, JANUARY 15th 11:59 PM HOL time. Please send your assignments to [email protected] with the subject line "HW5 - [Your HOL name]" for homework. So if I were sending mine in, it would say "HW5 - Kim Alting" in the subject line. Please also include your name, house, and HOL ID at the top of your e-mail. I need this info to give you your hard-earned points, so double check that it's there! If you have any questions or need help with anything, please don't hesitate to send me a HOL message (my ID is ki1010). I am always happy to help!
Emails with attachment won't be graded.
Today's homework will be offered in a slightly different format than usual. You will have options as to which parts you want to complete, up to a total of 30 points. Please keep an eye on how many points each option is worth when selecting which you will do for homework - while you're free to do more than 30 points worth of work if you wish, I will not give you extra points for it, nor will I consider more than 30 points worth of options. Here are your options:
TRUE OR FALSE (10 points, 1 point each)
Indicate whether a statement is true or false, and correct the statement if it is false.
1. The Antidote to Uncommon Poisons is a more powerful version of the Antidote to Common Poisons.
2. The Antidote to Uncommon Poisons contains fire seeds.
3. The Antidote to Uncommon Poisons will burst into a cloud of bugs if you brew it incorrectly.
4. The Shrinking Solution is used to counter-act the Swelling Solution.
5. The recipe for the Shrinking Solution cannot be found in the regular textbook for this course, Magical Drafts and Potions.
6. If brewed correctly, the Shrinking Solution should let off lots of smoke.
7. Herbicide is used to kill or damage plants.
8. Herbicide contains Horklump juice.
9. The Confusing Concoction is called that because it's recipe is so confusing.
10. A successful Confusing Concoction should be thick like a milkshake.
FILL IN THE BLANK (20 points, 2 points each)
"The Antidote to Uncommon Poisons is still only capable of curing ____-__-_____ ___________. The difference is [that] one deals with _______ poisons and one deals with ________ poisons. For many cases in the magical world, poisonings work ___________________________, and thus we have two main antidotes for those different ways. There are always exceptions, of course, but we don't cover those in this course. "
"Often this potion can be covered in ___________' curriculum, but I find that students have a __________________ (and aren't very __________ with the potion) until they've been dealing with potions for _____________. The Herbicide Potion is used to kill or damage plants. It is used very often in _______________________________ to keep unwanted plants from overrunning the place."
SHRINKING SOLUTION: A HISTORY (30 points)
As I mentioned in today's lesson, the Shrinking Solution actually has a very interesting (though admittedly strange) history. In at least 400 words, please research and report on the history of the Shrinking Solution's use.
PRACTICAL (30 points)
As always, you are allowed to create some sort of graphical/artistic/creative representation of anything related to today's lesson. Please remember to upload the image to a photo-hosting site like Photobucket or Tinypic and send me the direct link only. Also, please remember to give me a title or brief caption for the photo in the e-mail, so that I can be clear as to what it is.
THE UNLUCKY STUDENT (30 points)
Throughout the term, you have been bothered again and again (and perhaps even pitied) a rather unlucky student in the class. There are many other unlucky potions students in the history of the subject. For this option, you may do one of two things:
1) Research another person who was unlucky in potions class, and give me a biography of them. Who were they? What were they like? What did they go on to do? What are some examples of their failures in potion-making? Etc. Please write at least 400 words about this person.
2) Write me a profile of the unlucky student in your class. (Please make this person up! Do not use another student at HOL for this assignment - unless you have asked them and they have given you explicit permission, which I will need proof of in some form or another. If you are writing this profile on a real student, remember that it should be kept respectful of that student. Anyone who disrespects another student, or professor, will not receive any points for the assignment and will be reported to staff.)
Please write me at least 400 words about this student. Here are some questions you may want to answer in your profile of the student:
1. What is their name?
2. What year are they in?
3. What house are they in?
4. Which potion are they the worst at?
5. Which potion actually worked out for them?
6. What subject do they excel in?
7. Write me a brief explanation of:
You are allowed to cut down the word requirement to 200 words if you use a Doll Maker website to create a picture of the Unlucky Student and send the link to that picture to me in your e-mail as well. Please don't send in any attachments, as emails with attachments won't be graded.
